Atlanta Motorsports Park stands as one of North America’s most distinctive driving venues—a 1.835-mile, 16-turn circuit designed by Formula 1 architect Hermann Tilke in the North Georgia foothills. Located 55 miles north of Atlanta in Dawsonville, AMP combines European-inspired track design with 98 feet of elevation change, signature corners modeled after Spa and the Nürburgring, and the only CIK Level A/1 karting facility in America. The facility operates as a motorsports country club, though numerous HPDE organizations host public events throughout the year.

How to Use This Guide

This guide answers the “what do I do next?” questions before and during your first Just Track It weekend at AMP. Use it in three passes:

  1. Before you leave home: Use the checklists to pack and avoid rookie failures (battery, numbers, loose items, fluids). Verify your exhaust meets the 98 dB limit—this is strictly enforced.
  2. At the track: Use the arrival flow and compliance sections to get through gate/registration/tech without drama.
  3. On track: Use the layout section for orientation, but treat the drivers’ meeting as the final authority on passing zones, flags, and session protocols.

Critical: AMP’s 98 dB sound limit means mufflers are mandatory. Open exhaust configurations will not pass. No refunds are issued for vehicles that are too loud.

Rule Hierarchy

When something conflicts, follow this order:

  1. Track management and posted track rules (including local ordinance)
  2. Just Track It supplemental regulations (JTI’s written rules for that weekend)
  3. Drivers’ meeting / chief instructor / control directives (what you are told that morning)
  4. This guide (best practices and “how it usually works”)

If you ever feel uncertain: ask grid staff, pit-out, or an instructor before you roll.

Just Track It Event Format

Run Groups

Just Track It operates five run groups based on experience level:

Run GroupDescriptionPassing Rules
Novice InstructedFirst-timers with mandatory in-car instructionStraights only with point-by
Novice SoloSigned-off novices driving without instructorStraights only with point-by
Intermediate 1Developing drivers building consistencyDesignated zones with point-by
Intermediate 2Experienced intermediate driversAnywhere on track with point-by
AdvancedHighly experienced driversAnywhere on track with point-by

Novice Instructed and Novice Solo share the same on-track sessions. Intermediate 2 and Advanced share passing rules (anywhere with a point-by).

Novice Instruction Program

Novice instruction is mandatory until you are signed off by an instructor to drive solo. Your instructor rides in the passenger seat, providing real-time coaching on braking points, turn-in references, and throttle application. You will not be sent onto the track alone until an instructor certifies you are ready.

AMP’s blind crests, dramatic elevation changes, and signature corners (particularly Turn 1 and the Eau Rouge section) make instruction especially valuable here. First-time visitors consistently note that observation laps prove invaluable—learning what lies beyond each blind hill safely rather than discovering it at speed.

Session Format

Standard JTI sessions run 20 minutes with five sessions per run group throughout the day. The last two sessions of the day extend to 30 minutes with combined groups (Novice Instructed + Novice Solo together; Intermediate 1 + Intermediate 2 together; Advanced may combine with I2).

Membership

Just Track It annual membership is offered but not required to participate in events. Registration occurs through MotorsportReg.

Passing Protocol

The slower car gives the point-by signal by extending their left arm out the window, pointing toward the passing side. When giving a point-by, stay on the racing line and lift gradually—do not brake suddenly.

At AMP, primary passing zones for lower run groups are typically:

  • T12 to T1 (main straight / 1,200 feet)
  • T5 to T6
  • T7 to T10

Blocking is strictly prohibited and results in immediate consultation with the Chief Steward.

Arrival Flow

A clean first-time flow at AMP:

  1. Navigate via GA-400 North → GA-53 at McDonald’s → left at stop sign → straight through roundabout → right onto Duck Thurmond Road → entrance on right.
  2. Gate: Sign waiver at main gate (SpeedWaiver) → receive wristband.
  3. Helmet Inspection: Go to Discovery Parts → get helmet inspected and stickered.
  4. Registration: Check in at clubhouse → receive run group decal.
  5. Paddock: Claim a spot in the 2.5+ acre paved paddock → unload → set up canopy/tools → apply car numbers.
  6. Drivers’ Meeting: Mandatory attendance (typically 8:15-8:30 AM).
  7. Track Orientation: Lead-follow session under standing yellow for all groups.
  8. Grid for Session 1: Arrive at false grid 10 minutes before session → listen to grid marshal → go out calm.

  • Primary corridor: GA-400 North from metropolitan Atlanta.

Track Layout and Corner Analysis

The main circuit spans 1.835 miles with 16 turns running counterclockwise. Track width measures 35-40 feet with FIA Formula One-style curbing throughout. A 1,200-foot main straight provides the primary overtaking opportunity.

AMP features multiple blind crests, dramatic drops, and compression zones that significantly affect vehicle dynamics. Six distinct circuit configurations enable up to three simultaneous events—a capability that distinguishes AMP from most competing facilities.

Turn-by-Turn Breakdown

Turn 1: Respect the Danger
Downhill, off-camber right-hander—widely considered the most dangerous corner on the circuit. Begin on track right and brake early. The downhill approach and off-camber surface will push you wide. This corner consistently catches drivers who believe they can carry more speed than physics permits. Stand on the brakes and prioritize a clean exit.

Turns 2-3
Technical section leading to The Carousel. Maintain momentum and set up for the constant-radius left.

Turn 4: The Carousel
Long, constant-radius left-hander inspired by the Nürburgring’s famous banked section. Maintain a single steering angle throughout. Modulate throttle carefully: more throttle pushes you outward, less keeps you on line. Avoid over-accelerating; momentum management matters more than raw speed.

Turn 5: Beware the Exit Curb
Position flush with entry curbing on right; brake in a straight line. Do not use the exit curb—it is notoriously rough and has caused numerous incidents. The bumps will upset your car at precisely the wrong moment.

Turn 6: Entry Over Exit
Similar to Turn 1 with downhill approach, but offers more banking and grip than expected. Focus on entry speed rather than exit acceleration. Early, smooth brake release allows you to carry speed through the highly banked section.

Turns 7-9
Technical section requiring precise car placement. Set up for Turn 10.

Turn 10: Resist Early Turn-In
The most technical corner on the circuit. Punishes early turn-in—convince yourself to delay initiation longer than feels natural. Keep slight left steering input on exit to prepare for The Dip.

Turn 11: The Dip
Fast right-hander featuring significant compression. Trust the compression. As the track drops away, significant downforce develops, providing more grip than you’d expect. Feel the compression before applying power.

Turns 11-12: Eau Rouge Section
Replica of Spa-Francorchamps’ iconic uphill complex. The subsequent double-apex left requires patience—wait until inside the second apex before accelerating hard.

Turns 14-16: Eau Rouge / Main Straight Setup
Do not lift. Continue accelerating while balancing throttle. Maintain constant radius: outside (right) → inside (left) → outside (right) → inside (left). Smooth transitions from left to right steering essential. The blind right-hand element rewards reconnaissance—drive it slowly the first time to learn the line before committing speed.

Track Surface and Conditions

Pavement and Grip

AMP features standard racing asphalt with adequate grip, particularly in banked sections like Turn 6. The racing surface lies between white boundary lines, with limited paved runoff beyond—most off-track excursions lead directly to grass or gravel. Track edge drop-offs measure several inches in places, making clean driving essential.

Tire Pressure Guidelines

Start with cold pressures of 32-36 PSI front, 30-34 PSI rear for DOT-legal tires, expecting 3-6 PSI increase when hot. Multiple compression zones (particularly The Dip) require sufficient pressure to prevent rim contact.

Surface Effects on Wear

Aggressive elevation changes create varied tire loading. The constant steering input through The Carousel stresses outside tires significantly. Multiple heavy braking zones accelerate front tire wear. Plan for higher consumption than on flatter circuits.

Wet Weather Concerns

The Dip section before Turn 6 presents the most significant wet-weather concern. Drains can overflow during sustained rain, causing water to pool across the racing surface. Events have been black-flagged when water encroached on the line.

Corners requiring extra caution in rain:

  • Turn 1: Already dangerous when dry; downhill off-camber approach becomes treacherous wet
  • Turn 6/The Dip area: Primary drainage issues; most likely to collect standing water
  • Blind crests: Cannot see standing water until committed

Wet weather adjustment: Increase tire pressures 6-8 PSI above dry settings.

Sound Compliance

98 dB Limit — Strictly Enforced

AMP enforces a 98 dBA limit at 50 feet from the track edge under full throttle. This zoning restriction means mufflers are mandatory—open exhaust configurations will not pass. Cars with OEM exhaust systems generally comply, but track-prepared vehicles often require Supertrapps or similar restrictors.

Penalty System

InfractionConsequence
FirstBlack flag until exhaust modification demonstrated
Second (same day)Driving day ended
Third (within 30 days)60-day membership suspension
Fourth (within 60 days)120-day suspension
Attempting to “trick” meterMembership termination + $1,000 fine

No refunds are issued for vehicles that are too loud.

Night Operations

The sound ordinance effectively prohibits night running for most events. AMP occasionally offers “unlimited sound limit days” for special events.

Tech Inspection

JTI Tech Process

Most organizers require a completed tech inspection form prior to arriving. This form can typically be self-certified or signed by a qualified mechanic.

On-site verification:

  • Helmet inspection occurs at Discovery Parts—staff verify Snell certification and physical condition
  • Vehicle tech inspection depth varies; expect spot checks of wheel lug torque, fluid leaks, and loose interior objects
  • Convertibles and vehicles with aftermarket roll protection receive additional scrutiny

During the event: If you have an off-track excursion, spin, or contact, you must report to the hot pit for re-inspection before resuming.

Vehicle Preparation Requirements

  • Brake fluid clean and recently flushed
  • Brake pads with adequate material
  • Firm brake pedal with no excessive travel
  • Operational brake lights (minimum two)
  • Battery securely mounted with no frayed cables
  • Glass headlights taped with “X” pattern
  • Radiator overflow tank (minimum 1 pint capacity)
  • All loose items removed from interior
  • Wheel lugs properly torqued
  • No fluid leaks
  • No 4-point harnesses (must be 5 or 6-point if aftermarket)

Safety Equipment Requirements

Helmet Standards

AMP requires Snell SA2015 or SA2020 certification—motorcycle (M-rated) helmets are not permitted. Bring your helmet to Discovery Parts (on-site) for inspection and stickering before your first session. Helmet rentals available including required balaclavas. Confirm the currently accepted JTI helmet standard in your event confirmation and during on-site tech inspection.

Required Driver Attire

  • Long pants and closed-toe shoes that fully enclose the foot are mandatory.
  • Long-sleeve shirts recommended (preferably 100% cotton).
  • Fully caged vehicles with racing harnesses typically require minimum two-layer SFI or FIA-rated suits, gloves, and racing shoes.

HANS Device

Strongly recommended for all drivers and increasingly required for vehicles with aftermarket harnesses.

Vehicle Eligibility

Most automobiles and motorcycles that pass safety inspection are welcome. SUVs, trucks, and vans are not permitted on the main circuit except by pre-approval from the Chief Instructor or Safety Steward.

Convertible Requirements

Open-cockpit vehicles must have a roll bar or factory roll-over protection system with the top of the bar extending above the driver’s helmet when seated. Removable hardtops do not qualify. Advanced run groups typically require aftermarket roll bars plus racing harnesses.

Fire Extinguisher

Just Track It does not mandate fire extinguishers. However, a securely mounted, driver-accessible fire extinguisher (minimum 2.5 lb Halon or dry chemical rated B:C) represents prudent safety equipment. Many organizations require it for advanced run groups and caged vehicles.

Paddock and Facilities

Paddock Layout

AMP offers over 2.5 acres of paved paddock space. Assignment is first-come, first-served for HPDE events.

Best Periods

September through mid-October offers ideal conditions: comfortable temperatures in the 70s-80s, low humidity, clear skies, and spectacular fall foliage. Mid-May through late June provides a good secondary window. Avoid mid-July through early August when heat, humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms create challenging conditions.

Morning Fog

Mountain and valley fog commonly develops during spring and fall mornings, typically burning off by 9-10 AM. Plan first sessions after fog clears.

Temperature Swings

20°F temperature swings between morning and afternoon are common. Pack layers.

Altitude Effects

At 1,362-1,800 feet elevation, naturally aspirated engines lose approximately 4% power due to lower air density.

Track History

AMP opened in 2012 with its first official race—a ChumpCar World Series event—in November 2013. The facility represents the vision of Jeremy W. Porter, a former Formula ICC kart racer who raised over $2.5 million in membership fees before breaking ground—during the 2008 financial crisis.

The track earned its place on Road & Track’s Top 10 North American Tracks in 2016. Designer Hermann Tilke—the architect responsible for most modern Formula 1 venues including Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, and Sochi—incorporated tribute corners replicating famous European sections, most notably an Eau Rouge/Raidillon complex inspired by Spa-Francorchamps and a Carousel modeled after the Nürburgring.

The facility operates as a motorsports country club with membership initiation fees starting around $12,500, though numerous HPDE organizations host public events. Amenities include trackside condominiums, 212 private garages (waitlisted), a 20,000 sq ft conference center, pool, fitness center, and the Fuel Kitchen restaurant. The property bills itself as America’s first green, sustainable motorsports club with solar arrays and recycling programs.
